Chapter 14

On the morning of the meeting with Lord Benson they ate breakfast in haste, with little interest in the dishes. Mr Phillips even excused himself and went to the library for a last recap of all the arguments they had in Elizabeth’s favour. Unexpectedly he came back with a message in his hand, and a broad smile on his face, trying not to hide his satisfaction. “Mr Darcy informed his uncle, the Earl of Matlock, about your marriage and the problems involving the Walfords, and the earl has expressed his intention to be present at the meeting with Lord Benson.”

“But why?” Elizabeth asked, annoyed. “Did we not decide to keep this a secret?”

Mr Phillips sat down next to her, they could tell how excited he was about that particular day and the visit they were going to make. “My dear, we made that decision based on what we thought was best for you, without knowing the circumstances or the rules existing in London high society. Let us have confidence in Mr Darcy, as he has the experience and the position in society one needs to solve such a problem.”

“We do not even know what the problem is,” Elizabeth said, still uncomfortable.

“Perhaps we do not know the details, but we are sure that it is about the Walford inheritance. It cannot be concluded without your mother, which has created a problem, probably for Lady Arabella Walford. She thought it would be easily solved—just a visit to their solicitor, a signature and total acceptance from Isabella Russell. But it turns out that matters are different and she or they have to react accordingly.”

Having confidence in Darcy–that was something Elizabeth accepted with all her heart. Her future husband was fighting in the end for their fortune and her place in society.

“Yes, you are right,” she said, looking at Mr Phillips. She even smiled as the dream proved to be real, her knight had declared war and intended to win.

They decided to meet an hour earlier at Darcy’s house, as he lived not far from Lord Benson. In the daylight, the house was even more impressive; shining in the sun it had an elegance that could be found only in that neighbourhood. She could now clearly see the truth—Gracechurch Street was picturesque and merry, there were always people in the street, maids and their mistresses talking and meeting for the morning market, children running among the passers-by. In contrast, in Darcy’s neighbourhood, she hardly could see anybody walking on the street. There were many carriages, but few people, and that discovery made her wonder which she preferred in the end. She was fond of Meryton, which was like Gracechurch Street, but she would have to get accustomed to these new rules and habits and ways of living. She wondered for the first time if she would like that life. Until then that new life had meant only Darcy, but he had a family, a neighbourhood and obviously a somewhat different life. She was
